Deck Stepped Mast

I am refitting an Irwin 28, and am about to bed the mast boot. There are only four quarter inch bolts, 1 3/4 inches long, holding the boot to the deck. Would it be wise to thru bolt the boot with longer bolts and a backing plate?

Deck Stepped Mast

thirdredmohican,
The mast step is pretty much there to just hold the base of the mast from moving around and it doesn''t take much to do that on a smaller boat.I assume you mean the bolts that currently there are not through the deck. No, it wouldnt be a bad idea to through bolt with a backing plate but I would be more concerned that the core materal is dry and sound in the area of said mast step before re-install.
