60 Amp alternator and 3 Odyssey Batteries

Do you think 3 Odyssey 31M-PC2150 100 Ah (nominal 20h d/c) batteries in parallel (which i desire mostly for their cycles at 80% DOD rather than their current acceptance) would be well matched to a 60 A alternator or do you think it would seriously reduce the alternator lifespan?

you should be fine as long as the alt has good cooling. the standard number is 25 % of your bank, which would be 75 amps. if you run you batteries down to 50 % or 150 amps, it would take 2.5 hours to fully recharge if it was a perfect system. but do to reasons of the way batteries charge it might take 5 hours to fully charge. figure in 2 hours you could put in about a 100 amps ( if alt cooling up to par ) which is close to the real normal range of 70 to 80 %.

so yes it should be okay if you have good alt cooling, maybe even a vent tube going to the alt

ScottyT—

The Odyssey batteries are AGM batteries using TPPL technology IIRC. They have a very, very high current acceptance rate...and three 100 AH ones could probably be charged at 200 amps to begin with and be perfectly fine. The 25% rule does not apply to them.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.
