Painting My Outboard Motor - Tips?

Hi all. I was given a 1980's 25 HP Evinrude OB by my Brother-in-law last weekend. While I do already have a 8 HP Nissan OB, I figure that this will be more fun for my twin 14 year-olds on our 12' inflatable. Anyway, it has been sitting in his shed for years and the paint is flaking off. Believe it or not, it actually fired up after I sprayed some starter fluid in it! Cool, now back to the paint.

I don't care about making it look showroom new, but I should stop the corrosion before it gets out of hand. So, would you all recommend partial disassembly before painting, or leave it whole? Second question is about paint - Special marine paint or just anything decent with good prep?

Thanks in advance for any input. I love this site.

Bill

Do t in a way it is describable for you - outboards are the most stolen - make it unique - and less attractive for someone wanting to steal it..

i used three different bright colors of engine paint in a checkerboard pattern. Looks pretty bush league but there isnt an OB like it anywhere I have ever seen. Looks like hell but works fine. Best kind of outboad!
