If your motor ran, and YOU shut it off, why wouldn't you just try to crank it over with the fuel off, what are you hoping to discover by turning it over by hand? I don't think you are going to learn anything by looking under the valve cover, unless it's catastrophic and already happened. So do a wet and dry compression test, and bring us back the full set of #'s, this is how you diagnose a less than catastrophic engine failure. A compression test will not diagnose your cooling issue, and a cooling issue doesn't clang or bang, till it has made a catastrophic failure. I doubt the valve train was rattling, if a part were rattling in your valvetrain, it's going to be shot.
