Magnetic interference with 6002 controller?

I purchased an Raymarine S1 wheel pilot and am ready to install the 6002 control panel. Unfortunately, the only good spot to install it is right next to a stereo speaker (with a magnet). The installation guide says to keep it greater than 2.5 feet from a magnetic source. My question is how critical is that distance? Will the 6002 still function if it is about about 6" from the magnet? It seems to me that a magnetic field wouldn't have much effect on a control panel. Anyone have any input/experience on this?

your speaker could have magnetic shielding so maybe that's not an issue. why don't you hookup your S1 and try it. don't have to mount anything. just hookup and lay it about your cockpit for trial.

Check the interference with a hand held compass. Move the compass around the speaker about the same distance that your controller would be. If there is interference the compas needle will move.

I contacted Ray, and they said it won't be an issue.
