It is a rectangular soft metal sheet that holds the rudder. But it is not enough: we lost the rudder on our Mistral 16 last week end when we capsized. The next one will be tied to the boat !

Daniel:

Where is that metal sheet you mentioned? On my boat there is traveler rail and tiller goes under it and then into the rudder head. If the boat capsizes, rudder cannot slide off the pins since tiller is held down by the rail. Tiller itself just slides into the rudder head, but there is a line from the rudder that is cleated to the tiller so the tiller itself cannot slide out of the rudder head.
See this photo from Wayfarer site: almost identical, except that Wayfarer uses pin instead of line to secure the tiller.

Cheers,
Bo

Re: Mistral 16 Rudder ?

Hi Bo,
Thanks for the Wayfarer picture. Very instructive. There are major differences with our system;
1) our traveler is at the feet of the helmsman, it is not above the tiller like shown on the picture.
2) it is just a metal clip (sorry for the metal "sheet) that was supposed to hold the blade (this is a very standard system: all the lasers and another mistral 16 at our joint use it). This clip lets the pintle (pin) coming in the gudgeon (hole) and is supposed to prevent the rudder from sliding back.
