Swing Keel problems

I have a 25' Ericson with a swing keel. Once the keel has swung into the extended position it will not retract into the up ( raised position ) I would be most greatful if some one might know, when the keel is fully extended is it straight down, 90 degrees to the hull or should it have a lesser degree of extention and be positioned to angle aft. If there is any form of locking deviece I am unable to establish it position. If any one can advise me in these areas of concern & how the system to recover the keel would be designed that would also be very useful. A rough drawning would be of great help.

I'm not familiar with the Ericson swing keel arrangement, and so the following is based on my Morgan 30 centreboard arrangement.

The keel swings down as far as it can go in the Morgan i.e. it comes up against the main keel and can go no further. At this point, it is roughly at right angles to the hull.

The keel is raised by a small winch and a stainless steel wire which runs from the cockpit over a series of pulleys to a rod which is connected to the keel. I can send you (or post) a diagram of this arrangement, if that would help.

In my case, if the connection between the rod and the keel failed, I would have to haul the boat and remove the keel in order to repair the attachment point.

Like Stuart I can't comment directly on the E 25' swing keel. Our Tartan 27' has a full keel with a centerboard that drops out of the bottom though.
On our boat there is a line that emerges in the cockpit which can be cleated with the board at any angle from 90* to 0*. The line goes to a 'double pulley' that has line in one groove and wire rope in the other. The wire rope side goes down through the hull to the centerboard.
If you can find this 'double pulley' on your E25 it is a possible place for one or both lines to get jammed.
If you can't find anything wrong with your set up it may be time for a haul out on a travel lift.

As other have stated... I'm not sure on an Ericson, but on my Hunter the keel is still angled aft about 10 -15% when fully down.
