Tranny Maintenance

The post below on tranny rebuilds got me to post my question.

My Yanmar 4jh2-TE engine has approx 2800 hours. There's a steady sound coming from the transmission (whine? hum? tone? -- something like that). I haven't had the boat too long, and I don't know if that's normal or not. I assumed the transmission would be virtually silent, but perhaps this is normal.

Is this normal? How can I determine if the transmission needs work? What sort of maintenance is required for the transmission?

Any help is appreciated.

drive trains are not necessarily quiet, you can get noise from the transmission, the cutless bearing, the propeller etc. It is a characteristic you get to know about a particular boat. Give it time and get to know your boat...
