400 half inch Osmotic Blisters

I am new to sailing and have recently made an offer on a 1985 Catalina 36.
The marine survey notes 400-500 half inch Osmotic Blisters and 10-12 2-inch blisters.
I have been advised that I only need to repair the 2-inch blisters. However I am concerned with that advice... should I be concerned with the 400-500 Osmotic Blisters?
If so what are my options?

That is a boat that I would run, not walk away from. Two inch blisters are huge and typically when they are that large in diameter, they are also fairly deep suggesting more than a superficial osmotic blistering problem. The proper cure for this extensive a problem is to do a peel, and to come back and build up the peeled depth with fiberglass cloth with epoxy or vinylester resin. Anything less you can expect to have the problem return and cause further structural damage. Even doing a peel is no guarentee, but done right, and if you keep your bilges dry, a peel and glass job should be a permanent fix.

So, if for some reason you were getting this boat for $10,000 to $15,000 less than market value, where you could afford to do a peel, and you didn''t mind living without your boat for 6 months of dry season (usually not winter time on the Atlantic Coast) then maybe I would consider this boat. Otherwise, there are a lot of other boats out there (most of a better design and build quality).

I tend to agree with your advisor - do nothing with the small ones but repair the large ones. Peeling and recoating is the only thing I know of to rid your boat of the smaller ones. It is highly unlikely that the small ones have or will cause structural problems.
From my readings, the Cat36 is a fine sailboat. I suggest contacting the builder about the pimples and also participating in the Catalina owner''s list. Catalinas are everywhere.

I agree with Jeff H. Two inch blisters are huge, and 400-500 blisters is a widespread problem. You can buy a Catalina or other boat that does not have such a problem. The present owner has a boat with a serious problem. Why should you take on his problem, unless he either fixes the problem before the sale, or reduces his price enough to justify you in taking on his problem? Nobody likes a bargain more than I, but, as Jeff H. suggests, I would run from this one. If all you do is repair the big blisters, and then you want to sell the boat later, you are going to have a very hard time selling it at anywhere near market value with 400-500 osmotic blisters.
