Cost of genset and putting in?

Does anyone have an idea of what a 4kw, 6kw, and a 7kw generator are?

Also, what would it cost to place one in a vessel? Nothing specific, just a ballpark. Can be a five hundred dollar difference in your quoate. Juts trying to figure out if I would be better off getting a boat with this already installed, or if I get a good enough deal on one without and putting it in.

Sorry, Gordon, your first question is a little vague. What "they are" are engine/generator sets that burn fuel to produce electrical power.

If your question refers to the kw rating, that stands for "kilowatt", which is 1000 watts. Multiply the voltage (Volts) by the current (amps) to get the wattage. A true 6kw at 120 VAC (alternating current, like in your house) would yield approximately 50 amps. BTW, 1500 watt hair dryers are not uncommon today and you could only power 4 of those at one time.

I was at a boat show recently and just happened to notice that boat gensets from 4 to 6.5 kw were about $4000.00. Get ready for price shock.

Well I have to admit being around boats most my life (bass boats), price does not come as a shock to me. 4000, seems about what I might expect, so what about installation?

Just want to keep to keep things in mind for when I buy. Have looked at some quality boats in the 36 - 38 range, but most don''t have gensets....not saying I will need one, know for sure I can make it the first year without, but maybe can run it up int he price when wheeling and dealing.

If you are having pro- installed plan on spending about what the cost of the unit is for installation. e.g. $4k for unit $4k for labor...
