Cheoy Lee 31 Rudder shaft

My Cheoy Lee Offshore 31 has a substantial looking solid stainless steel rudder shaft. We are planning on going offshore in a year or two. I'm probably going to pull the rudder and have the shaft and rudder inspected and maybe x-rayed for defects on this 40 year old boat. Does anyone know if there is a history of rudder failures on vintage Cheoy lees? Everything seems rock solid and there is no cracking or delamination of the fiberglass rudder. Will I be wasting time and money to take it off?
