Feeding my watermaker

Hi folks,

When underway my PUR 40E watermaker makes a clunking sound and the output falls off. I assume this is the pump cavitating because of insufficient flow. The manual says to install a scoop on the intake through-hull. However, my next haul-out won't happen for a long while.....

Could I install a small pressure-switch pump between the through-hull and the pre-filter to solve this problem? Would doing so create others?

Thanks!
