centerboard

I purchased a 1985, 27' boat 4 months ago, am in the process of replacing the centerboard. The board is designed to pocket in the fixed keel (in up position). Does anyone have an idea the amount of play, side to side, a centerboard should have in the down position? It may vary among boats, but I am assuming the tolerance should be pretty tight.

My Macgregor 26X is a centerboard. It's not tight at all. Under way, the side pressure jams the board against the side and it won't move (unless you hit something.)
