Oil pressure alarm question

The oil pressure alarm on my Volvo 2003T diesel tests OK using the button on the panel, but it does not sound when the key is "on" and the engine is stopped. My experience is that the alarm should sound before starting and after stopping. The gauge shows the pressure is fine, but I am concerned about the alarm. Any ideas if this is normal behavior for this engine? FYI, this is on a J/40.

Dave, I''m getting acquainted with a new engine and am learning that both water temp and oil pressure have *two* sensors, actually one is a sender (to the gauge) and the other a switch (to the alarm). You may have a faulty sender (or whatever your Volvo folks decided to call it). Jump across the terminals with the switch on but engine off; if the alarm bleats, perhaps that''s proof enough that the switch/sender/sensor needs replacing.
