Diesel Fuel Filters
I've had a Racor 500 turbine filter on the boat over 6 yrs and decided to change it out to the Racor 215 cartridge filter, clear bowl, water sensor and priming pump. The only problem with the 500 was that the filter had to be mounted above the height of the tank in the only clearing in the engine compartment. It was difficult to prime the air out of the system after changing out the filter. My thoughts were that the built in prime pump in the 215 unit would solve that problem. The R15's filter elements are around $25 instead of the little paper elements being around $7. If I can find a vacuum gage that would give me both clogged filter warning and water in fuel warning.
Twin filters and valves would be overkill for me, we have to haul diesel down to the boat, non of the marinas on our lake have it. I use a Baja filter when refueling usually twice a year and get it from the local Shell station. I always add the biocide and cetane stabilizer when topping off.
Have I missed anything???
I have the mechanical vacuum gauge but it is hard to see from the cockpit, so I installed one of these:
LED lighting, soundproof, Sailor's Solutions Inc.
Wired it up to a spare idiot light on the engine panel and adjusted it to come on early so I have plenty of warning.
