I'm Attempting to tear apart my 2000, 5 HP, 2 Cycle mercury (Tohatsu) to inspect and/or replace the impeller. I've run into problems remove the lower unit to get at the water pump.

According to the highly generic Clymer Tohatsu manual, to remove the lower unit, the gear shift lever is placed in the Forward position so the shift rod coupler is accessible so as to disconnect the shift rod.

The diagrams in the manual don't readily depict anything I can identify as to where the shift rod coupler actually is located, and the lower unit won't drop down more than a couple of inches. Obviously I need to disconnect the shift rod to remove the lower unit somehow, but I don't see any access to it.

Any ideas, advice, or recommendations would be greatly appreciated?

Thanks in advance,

Warren H.

BUY the real manual

But there should be a rubber plug #12 page 19 on the right side ( ? ) of the leg that lets you see the pin you have to remove

parts manual about page 23 shows picture of pin

If a dirty bottom slows you down what do you think it does to your boat
