Alcohol Tank Question
After owning the boat a year, I finally plucked up my courage today and worked on the pressurized Origo stove/oven. Turned out it wasn't bad at all - follow the directions for priming and it works like a champ. But it did require replacing the shutoff valve on the alcohol tank. The packing was shot and it leaked all the pressure out in less than a minute.
And speaking alcohol tank -- there may lie a problem. There was some old alcohol in the tank that was well and truly gross! It was a dark reddish brown, as if it had absorbed a lot of rust (presumably from the tank). I have no clue how long it had been there, but the boat was on the hard for two years before I bought it, so that alcohol sat for at least 3 years. I dumped it and put in a pint of new stuff before trying the stove. But I'm wondering now -- does all that discoloration mean the tank is rusting? Is the tank shot and should be replaced? What say the cognoscenti here?
