Dogbone ???

Just read a blog where a guy said he did something with a dogbone in regards to tie-up for high winds. What's a dogbone in regards to sailboat tie-up? Thanks.

What exactly was the context? For traditional boats with toptimbers, a dogbone is like a giant horizontal wooden cleat that spans 2 top timbers and sticks out beyond. Usually there is a panama right above them or through the center of them so that the docking line can have a good lead.

context dogbone used in;

"Hurricane Ida, our first of the season which, incidently, ends in 22 days.

Winds at 28mph here in Key West, gusts to 35mph. No rain yet.

Checked the boat yesterday, all the dogbones are properly deployed, didn't double up on the any lines for this blow."

Sounds like the dogbone that I referred to above is different than what you are looking for. Off the top of my head, I can't think of what it would be. Hopefully someone else will know.

Jay2:

I think it's the two steel rings with nylon webbing between them, that is sometimes sewn thru a mainsail's reef tack.

Jay—

On modern sailboats, a dogbone is usually what arisatx describes. I can see that they'd be useful for fastening down or reinforcing a lot of different things in preparation for heavy weather.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

dog bones

I'll bet he's talking about rubber snubbers on the dock lines, that look like a bone.
