anyone using a boat lift?

Here''s a question for folks lucky enough to have their boats on lifts. Do you find the advantages to be worth the high cost of installing (and maintaining) the lift?

During a brief recent visit to my future home port in SW FL, I note there are a large number of folks with boat lifts. They mostly held powerboats under 30'', but even some sailboats up to maybe 36'' or so were on lifts. I would have loved to contact some of these folks to chat, but that wasn''t much of an option at the time.

I can imagine some of the advantages of having your boat out of the water except when you are using her, but I wonder if it would pay to put one in. The 20,000 pound units go for around $6K, plus installation (so I''m guessing $10-12K total), which is money that would come out of the boat maintenance fund. Being as yet unfamiliar with all that goes into boat ownership and maintenance, I''m guessing (dangerous, I know), that you could save a lot on bottom maintenance, although I know you couldn''t do any maintenance which would foul the water or you would be in trouble pretty quick. I also guess you could do a lot of inspections for free (no haulout) as long as you could rig some safety device to hold the cradles in case the cables failed.

Anyone out there who can comment from experience?

TIA,
Duane (never have to do Winter-) Ising
