I'm not positive but I believe that the original boats were cast in but for a repair they allow using lag bolts.

I speak with some practical authority on this particular subject. This is why the built-in keel is now a non-negotiable for any boat I own.
What boats do you know of that are constructed in such a way as to allow the whole keel to fall off as in your picture?

Actually, the keel fell off the Cape Fear 38s, and several of the Bavaria 38s due to inadequate construction and thickness of laminate layup among others.
