Finally got the windlass back together and it seems to be working fine. Lots of lubricant and cleaning. Posted some photos of the project out on facebook (dave6330).

Thanks everyone and keep your fingers crossed. Sometime later I'll be remounting the windlass on Polaris' bow and see how she works.

AAaaarrrrggghhhh!!!!!

The windlass locked up again late last night and appears to be jammed up. I guess it's better that it happened on the kitchen floor than at anchor somewhere with a couple of hundred feet of chain out...

...looks like I'll be in the market for a replacement winch after all.
