furler trouble

I went up the mast and to unsnag the jib halyard and ran new line. After raising the jib, i attempted to use the furling system, only to have the halyard wrap around and tighten around the luff groove, making furling impossible. i dropped the sail and added a pigtail, but that didnt work either. maybe the shackles on the pigtail wouldnt spin under the load? so now the sail flaked in the cabin until i can rig a solution. any ideas?

thanks much
Quinn

You may need a halyard restrainer... or attach a pennant(pigtail?) so that the furler swivel is VERY near the top of the foil. Try attaching the pennant on the tack, allowing the sail to go to the top - that will determine if your "pigtail" is the problem.

sail size

well, the jib is considerably lower then the masthead. I do have two other sails, if one is long enough to reach the masthead that may solve the problem right there, until i get a pennant (pigtail?) long enough to cover the span....

Definitively need a restrainer.

head swivel?

would a head swivel accomplish the same thing? or a swivel and a restrainer? im a bit confused how to rig it, as currently there is a plastic drum topper that doesnt appear to do anything, the jib halyard just goes by it.... not attached to it in anyway... what is that things function?

thanks a lot guys.

What kind of furler do you have?

This is a typical halyard restrainer installation.

You don't need the Harken type with the sheave. A simple restrainer like this will work fine.

it looks exactly like that, with the addition of a round plastic drum (about the size of the split drum) between the top roller and the top of the luff groove

hopefully there is a restrainer up there already, i may have missed it as i just rigged it the way the old halyard was set. if there isnt one (a restrainer) what is the best way to install one at 40 feet in the air?
lol

exactly! with the exception that my halyard would be hopelessly wrapped around the whole kit and kaboodle
