Nissan 4-stroke quandry

I just bought a Nissan 6hp SailPro 4-stroke outboard, but now I'm thinking I should have kept my old faithful Nissan 5hp 2-stroke! The old motor was kept tilted up to the factory stop: this kept it out of the water at the slip and out of the water while sailing. The new 4-stroke appears to not like being tilted in a similar manner, even though it has a similar factory tilt stop. After sitting in the tilted up positon for a week, it would not idle unless I kept the choke half-on.

Is this really the case? Has anyone else experienced this problem?

ALL The new 3 star EPA motors seem to have NO tolorance for storage with fuel in the system .

BUT they have had a bowl drain going way back to deal with the issue ,seeing the picture you posted with the motor at 90 deg i can see it being and issue

Tohatsu and Nissan are the same engine...

This issue has been thrashed to within an inch of its life here. Please check it out.

It's a trash in the fuel isssue, not a tilt issue.

I highly recommend adding some "SeaFoam" fuel addititve to your fuel. It'll help clear the rapid varnish build up from your carb jets and the bowls from the new ethanol based fuels.

I realize that "miracle in a bottle" products rarely deliver on their promise, but this one has surprised me. It's cleared the carbs on my old motorcycle, the injectors on my DeLorean, and kept the carbs clean on my old Chrysler outboard.

It'll take a tank or so to clean the engine back out, but one can will do 2 tanks. Give it a try. (No, I don't work for or sell SeaFoam. Just had good luck with it)

FWIW, I have used "Berrymans B-12 Fuel Additive" for over 30 years in older and newer cars, 2 and 4 stroke outboards and motorcycles and have never had any of the problems you described or any other for that matter. As mentioned earlier it is vital that you drain the carb if it is not going to be used for more than a month or so. Don't ask me how I know this. No affiliation with Berryman's products, use at your own risk. This is hot stuff, will melt some plastics and paint. More info here:
