Replacing Cockpit Scupper Hoses Pearson 26

Replacing cockpit scupper hoses on Pearson 26

(This has been written as I could find little information on this topic anywhere, including Dan Pfeiffer's excellent website)

Materials

2 x 18" 1-1/2" id marine wet exhaust hose (no internal wire core, nylon core)
2 x Perko 328-08 1-1/2" thru hulls (identical replacement, it is easier to replace 2 x $7.00 thru hulls than clean up 30 year old ones)
8 x No. 24 (1-1/2 - 2") SS hose clamps
2 x 3M 4200 Sealant (small tubes)
1 sharp knife for trimming hose to exact fit
Acetone for wiping down fiberglass prior to applying 4200 sealant
Mineral spirits for cleaning up sealant
Large mouth groove joint (channel lock) pliers for 1-1/2" nut on thru hull
5/16" nut driver for hose clamps
Dielectric grease (from auto store, won't harm rubber and prevents corrosion)(trailer wheelbearing grease would probably work just as well)
Rags for wiping with acetone and mineral spirits

Steps

This project involved replacing 2 x 30 year old cockpit scupper hoses. Fortunately, I had disassembled and greased the original taper valves in the past so I knew the tapered valves were in good condition and capable of sealing out the sea as this project was done in the water.

Step 1 - Close tapered valve seacock
Step 2 - Loosen top hose clamps
Step 3 - Undo thru hull nut under cockpit
Step 4 - Pry out old sealant holding cockpit thru hull in place (barely)
Step 5 - Push and twist thru hull up into the cockpit
Step 6 - Undo hose clamps at bottom of hose
Step 7 - Remove hose from hull thru hull, by twisting and pulling upward
Step 8 - Cut new hose to old hose length
Step 9 - Rub dielectric grease into ends of new hose
Step 10 - Place 4 hose clamps on center of new hose, loosely tighten to hold them in place
Step 11 - Push and twist lower end of hose onto tapered valve seacock
Step 12 - Drop into place and tighten 2 hose clamps
Step 13 - Wipe cockpit sole around cockpit thru hull opening with acetone
Step 14 - Seal joint between cockpit sole and liner with 4200 sealant
Step 15 - Place large "rope" of 4200 sealant under flange of cockpit thru hull
Step 16 - Drop cockpit thru hull into place, remember to put nut on bottom before pushing it into the top of the hose
Step 17 - Continue working hose up onto thru hull, when done the hose should extend from the top to the seacock to the bottom of the cockpit thru hull threads
Step 18 - Hand tighten nut on bottom of cockpit thru hull, only hand tight as the 4200 has to set
Step 19 - Tighten top 2 hose clamps
Step 20 - Wait 24 hours, then tighten nut on thru hull 1/4 turn more using large mouth pliers (this allows the thru hull to compress partially cured 4200 sealant)

Is your P26 a P26 OD.
My cockpit drains do not have a valve, just fiberglass tubes which the hoses is attached to.
One of my projects is to cut them out and put in proper thru hulls

One Design Hose or Fiberglass Cockpit Drains

Mine is a 1979 Pearson 26 OD, made in Texas. I have heard of the fiberglass tube 26's before. I am attaching a OD picture from Dan's website that shows a hose configuration like mine. I don't know when they changed from fiberglass tubes to hose? - Mark

Dan Pfeiffer's Pearson 26 website

A very useful resource, but I don't think he is still updating it as he moved on to other boats. It is a great resource to the P26 owners.
