This is a picture of the companion way stairs.

What exactly are you looking for. Smoke, steam, sparks.
Would this be a feature you would like. If so why?

That would be handy. I would put a little door there myself though, so you have the option of looking at the motor or not.

More than likely there at one time or another there was an access issue and they just decided to replace that area with some Plexiglas. Or they have some sort of issue with gauges and they like to see the water temp gauge etc.. through that glass. I am going for the access part. Replaced eng or part and needed to just get in there. I don’t know sounds good to me.
