Truly "global"? To my knowledge, the only option is satellite, which is not cheap, depending on what you want to do and what your definition of cheap my be.

But in the U.S., if you can get a cell signal, then using one of the retail broadband aircards is a very viable and reasonably-priced option. I've used AT&T, which has worked fairly well (AT&T's service for voice is very spotty, but I've found that for data, such as a Blackberry and aircard, it works fine). I'm sure Verizon's service is great, and probably better than AT&T, but I haven't used Verizon data service.

Outside the U.S, but still in cell range, such as Batelco in the Bahamas of something like that, I bet you can buy a prepaid SIM card and plug that into your aircard. I've never done that, but I suspect it would work.
