Chad,
A SSB receiver or transceiver is a very good thing to have for weather coverage in this part of the world.
The Waterway Radio and Cruising Club Net, "The Waterway Net", gives Carribean weather every morning at 0745 on 7268LSB. There are also weather and safety nets for the Caribbean -- including the Bahamas -- on the marine bands.
The USCG Offshore and High Seas broadcasts cover the SW North Atlantic several times a day on various SSB frequencies (published on the Internet). WLO in New Orleans repeats the broadcasts on several of their channels.
Cruisers in the area talk with each other via SSB about weather, safety, and other cruising information.
Distances are long in the Bahamas, and most often VHF just won't cut it. SSB is more useful, particularly when you get SE of about Rum Cay and the outer Bahamian islands.
