homage to ohmage

ok, ive got a new stereo im rigging up... 200 watts to 4 speakers at 4 ohms...
(with 3 additional preamp out for f/r/sub)... using the harness to power the two speakers that came with the deal as fronts (50RMS)... my question is can my 4ohm output push an 8ohm load on the rears? I had a flashback to my 'band days' in my youth and seemed to recall that that is not a problem, but I'll get 1/2 the wattage outbound from 8ohm speakers... hence 100 watts rms on at 8ohm speaker being pushed by a 4ohm amp yields 50 rms and same proportional reduction in peak... uhhh am i close? lol... dont want to blow up any new toys...

any thoughts?

thanks
Quinn

It will work but you're right, the volume from the rear will be less. You can adjust the front/rear fader to compensate. You know that "200" watts is a bit of an exaggeration.

I'm using a little 40 watt class D switching amp/ equilizer with 4 outputs, 2 front, 2 rear. The front ones drive the 8 ohm speakers in the cabin, the rear are coupled through large coils to a 10" dual 4 ohm coiled woofer mounted in the door under the sink in the head. Great speaker enclosure for the woofer, no its a stowage location... Tunes are carried in an Ipod, or Sansa mp3 player. Fader works to ballance between the cabin speakers and woofer, equilizer ballances the speaker to cabin response.... Its been working for over 10yrs now, in the Santana 525, the woofer enclosure was the stowage location in the bow infront of the V berth..
