Globalstar Update?

Anyone hear or know anything about how Globalstar is faring in terms of getting its second generation satellites online? They originally claimed that they would be starting to come online by the end of 2009, and now are saying summer 2010. This timing may be significant because, as some may know, GS has been offering a "great" service plan of $34.95/month for unlimited usage. This offer expires March 31, 2010.

So, if the service is going to be improved for this coming North American sailing season, taking advantage of this offer before the end of March to lock in the pricing might be worthwhile. For me/us in particular, if it would be reliable in time for June, I'd consider using it for our rally. But we can't have a scenario where we can't connect to our twice-daily skeds.

Anyone have any info?

This "great" plan is only good until march 2010 after which you have to use one of their expensive plans.....just a bait and trap...

I didn't read it that way, but you might be right. If so, then the timing is much less significant. I thought you needed to sign up for a 12-month deal, which would lock in the pricing for a year. If in fact it's just a month-to-month and it would no longer be available after March, then it's much less interesting.

I had a Globalstar phone for more than a year here in California, my experience was not good. The phone is not waterproof, or weatherproof in any way and the service is poor. Getting a signal was difficult to say the least. I had better luck with a Verizon GZone phone. The same is true for the Spot Locator, which also is a Globalstar product. Some days no communication at all with it. They have been promising more satellites for several years, but it's never happened. I bet that they are all positioned over the middle east at the moment!
