Does anyone have any experience with the new Garmin GPS 176? I am considering the purchase of either this more expensive and a bit larger color unit vs. their Map 76.

I purchased a garmin 176c last year and really like. I bought a ram mount to mount it on. I found it easy to read in the sunlight. The only complaint I have at this point and it could be that I haven''t figured which parameter to set is to get the compass to show 3 digit degrees in the display. Other than that great gps..

agoodman,

Thanks for the reply. Do you feel the unit would be to cumbersome for me to stuff in my duffle to take on charters? I travel really light (sometimes one carry on). Is it practical for me to fly to places like St. Martin where we are going in May and then take out in our 240 Sea Ray Sun Deck out of Panaama City for a day trip. Do you see me using it in the cockpit of our charter boats as a hand held?

It is a little bigger than the conventional hand held models but should not be that big of issue. THe bigger issue would be where do you put it on a charter? On your own boat you will probably have a mount. I think it is to big to put in a pocket.

Just bought the 176c this past weekend. I hope to have a chance in the next week or so to really play with it so that I am well aquainted with it before our trip in April. I did buy a small solar battery charger that I am anxious to see work as I understand the 176 eats the batteries.
