I think it really depends on how exposed the pier you're going to be tied to is. The mooring whips seem to work okay in situations where there isn't strong cyclical movement of the boat due to tides, strong winds, or swells. Also, is it a fixed pier or a floating one? Personally, I wouldn't recommend using mooring whips for a sailboat.
