New Winches on a Rival 34

We had XW Rigging do a review of our Rival 34s winches and standing rigging. The rigging was fine, but our two primary winches had broken internal parts, and the chrome had worn away to reveal the bronze on the drums. When they suggested a replacement set instead of trying to track down parts for the orginal 1973 Lewmars, we agreed.

So, we just got back from two days of sailing with the new Lewmar 40 CST winches, and they were great. It's much easier now to trim the headsail by one person (no more tailing) and we typically leave them loaded instead of using the jam cleats. They are a nice upgrade, even if a bit spendy:

Next year we will likely replace the running rigging, and drop the size of the halyard diameter by 2 mm (to 8 mm) to reduce chaff and decrease weight. Since the halyards were installed, the new lines have become equally strong at a smaller diameter. We may also consider smaller diameter sheets.

XW Rigging also rebuilt our mast winches, which was noticeable when I raised the main to full height by hand. We also had the roller furling greased and its line replaced.

So, xmas came late for SR, but it's all good.
