Cut down cutlass bearing?

Since a 1"x 1 1/4" x3" cutlass bearing doesn't exist, can I cut down a 4" bearing?

I just did one yesterday. I used a 12" piece of 5/8" all-thread with nuts and washers to pull a 4" bearing into a 3" strut. After I pulled it in tight, I used a hacksaw to cut it as close as I could to the strut face. I then buffed it down using a 4" side grinder with a flapper sanding disk to get it smooth and clean. Worked perfectly.
