opencpn add charts

I downloaded opencpn and some charts... i am having trouble getting the opencpn to 'see' the files. i have tried to add the directory every way i can think of to no avail. anyone know the procedure for adding ecn charts so they are viewable?

Settings (wrench button) -> charts Tab -> Choose Directory -> Add Selection.
