Boon, the best way in my opinion is to get in touch with people who use those exotic woods and ask them where they get it, they have usually figured out the best/least expensive sources in a given area. One good group to call are cabinet making shops, another is people who make large musical instruments or furniture, and you can also find sources by talking to people who do wood carving, wood sculpture, and other artwork, maybe a wood carving teacher at a local college.

Also remember when shopping for mahogany that there is mahogany and then there is mahogany. Mahogany is one of those woods that is so special that everyone wants to call their wood "mahogany" even if it ain't, buyer beware!
