Edson rack and pinion steering
Crew
I am replacing tiller steering with wheel on my Roberts 36 (I've heard the debate, and I'm steel going with wheel!). Have members had experience with rack (quadrant) and pinion steering (eg edson forward mounted R&P)? Here's the link to the Edson cattle dog, page 5 http://www.edsonmarine.com/tradition...Catalog_T1.pdf
Why, is that this simple, apparently robust system sits pretty much on the tip of the rudderstock, takes up almost zero space in a smallish cruising cockpit; dispenses with chain, cable, idler wheels, quadrant and the engineering necessary to retrofit. Or the hell expensive Admiral series(Hydrive) helm pump and ram that you need to get rudder feedback (I still want my Aries to take over the helm on the longer legs).
Any feedback would be gratefully received. Cheers. Bill
