vhf licensing?

Hello all. I am planning on buying a handheld vhf radio for daysailing and general communications. Do I need to have a license to use it, and if so, where does one obtain it? Thanks all, and spring is around the corner (for us snow bound sailors up north).

No licensing needed. Also, it is no longer necessary to obtain a license for the "base" station on the boat.

The FCC will take your money however. You can get a license form and all info on the web, but none is required.

Just to clarify. Mike is correct, a license is not required in the US,but if you sail to another country, like the Bahamas, all of your transmitting & receiving equipment must be licensed. VHF,epirb, ssb, radar, etc.
