Electronic charting without a serial port...

There may be another driver needed to make the program use the USB port.

Electronic charting without a serial port...

I have the same problem. My new computer does not have a 9 pin plug to connect my garmin gpsmap 76. I have tried 3 USB to 9 pin adapters. 2 of them supposedly where winxp compatable but had issues. I could not get the one that did not cause problems to be recocnised as a com port. I''m begining to think it would be easier to buy a sextant and take a class.

If you solve your problem, please let me know how you did it!!

Thanks

Electronic charting without a serial port...

Someone told me that he saw a new laptop with 4 USB ports, has anyone seen one of these, and if so what kind is it?
I use a program called NavPak which set up easy on my USB port using an adapter cable and driver disk from RadioShack.
The program will acknowledge any COM number from 1 to 8, and it will talk to 4 ports simultaneously to integrate instruments without a multiplexer. Regards, John F.

Electronic charting without a serial port...

Hi All, same problem here in The Netherlands, got a new laptop, after being convinced by supplier there was a serial-port.
Not!!(still mad)
I''ve been searching thru the www, and found a device that slides in the PCMIA-port(hope i spell this correct), this converts, PCMIA-port to serial-port, easy to install hot-plugable.Brand is Silicom, but others have become available since, did cost about $100,= then( 1,5 years ago).
Hoping this helps.

I just purchased garmin''s USB-RS2323 adapter. It works, but I''m not on all aplications in the US Lights and Waterways software. I can''t say I''m overjoyed with it. It''s really designed for something else and I''m sure it''s not manufactured by garmin. It has a 9 pin male plug on one end but it also has screws to hold it down as does the female 9 pin end of the garmin cord. BARELY worth the 50 bucks, but it will get the information to your GPS.

MY COMPUTER SAY''S ITS NOT XP CERTIFIED

The Dell inspiron line has 9 pin serial port. I have been using it with my maptech offshore navigator software for 2 years connected to either my Garmin 3 or 48 without any problems. It works great. Garmin provides the wiring diagram for the connection to the 9 pin connector. The wiring takes about 10 minutes of soldering.
Hope this helps. I also have limited tech, knowledge, fortunately all of the wiring was color coded.

Electronic charting without a serial port...

A friend of mine sent his computer to me with the same complaint. I had to reome windows XP and install windows 2000 Pro in order for the USB to serial port to work correctly. Once that was done and the Capn Voyager was installed it found the GPS data on Comm port 5. Works great now, in fact we are using the second USB port with another serial adapter and interfacing to a pactor modem which is also working fine on Comm port 7.
