Mounting a goose neck to a mast
A guy from a local machine shop came out to look at my mast to fabricate a bracket we can use to mount the goose neck on it. He wants to use about 10 screws and a backing plate.
On my 30 foot boat, that just seems like massive over kill. Could this be done maybe with 6 screws, 3 on each side, and no backing plate? Or maybe pop rivits?
I favor rivets and FWIW a J24 uses (6) 3/16 SS rivets on each piece to hold the boom and Boomvang hardware on the mast and boom SO i would thing 6 screw are NOT gonna cut it
You might want to consider the leverage that the mainsail has over the gooseneck... How long is the boom... what kind of leverage does that give the mainsail...
No, 10 throughbolted machine screws are probably about right and the backing plate is a necessity.
