echomaster radar reflector

Ive got a Davis Instruments 'Emergency Echomaster-style Radar Reflector' on board. While it doesnt take up much space, I must say that when looking at the jetsons-esque piece of gear I had to wonder if it actually works or how effective it would actually be if ever needed. Should it be kept as a back up to more modern position reporting systems?

It is actually one of the more effective radar reflectors available...certainly one of the most cost-effective.

I've got the regular/normal sized Echomaster. Most reviews rate them well when mounted high in the raincatcher position. If I remember correctly, the emergency Echomaster that you have is a bit smaller and is made of foam board covered with foil, as opposed to the all-metal construction of the larger "normal" Echomaster.

crap... I think you're right about that...

I am getting the standard one as a radar reflector is required in Canada.

its the foil covered version

The foam emergency Echomaster is better than no reflector at all, but if you're concerned about your visibility to radar you might consider upgrading to the normal version for a nominal cost. They're often available on eBay for about $30.

REQUIRED??
I didn't know that. I only just got one maybe two years ago and sailed without one for 5 seasons. Nobody told me they were required. Anyway I have a cheapo mobi long cylindrical styled one hanging off the spreader tip. I hope they see me with that, but if not, I always see them and stay out of the way and I am not ever a night sailor nor fog sailor. Just a fair weather day sailor.

FWIW, I ended up with the Davis Deluxe model purchased from Defender, I was close to purchasing the Tri Lens but the cost combined with its weight swayed my decision to go with the Davis. Originally I wanted the Plastimo until I read the article/test linked above.

CaptKermie—

The mobri type radar reflectors are pretty useless. The Echomaster Deluxe is really the best value for a radar reflector.
