Which pawls for a Lewmar #10?

Hi All...

I was cleaning my #10 winches today and wanted to replce the pawls. I pulled out my box of spare pawls and to my surprise, they didn't fit. I used these on my #8 winches and they were fine.

I don't understand. The repair kits say "for winches 5-48 & 66" so i would expect that all those use the same size pawls.

Does anyone know what's up? What pawls do i need to look for?

Thanks...

IIRC, the pawls are only for winches made after a certain date, and your #10 winches may be models that were made before that date.

You know what the first rule of sailing is? ...Love. You can learn all the math in the 'verse, but you take
a boat to the sea you don't love, she'll shake you off just as sure as the turning of the worlds. Love keeps
her going when she oughta fall down, tells you she's hurting 'fore she keens. Makes her a home.

A similar thing happened to me today... I did a full overhaul on my Lewmar 40 two speed winch (starboard) because it didn't sound right. Upon putting it back together I found that the reason it didn't sound right was because the top pawls seamed too tall and, once the circlip was put on, the top cap put too much pressure on the pawls and at least one wasn't springing back quickly - as I could hear the clicking as loud as the bottom pawls when I went in the other direction.

So, I guess my question is... on the different pawls that Lewmar offers, is it the height that's different, the diameter of the round end, or both?

My first thought was that I would just have them machined down but I wanted to see if there are shorter pawls out there.

Thanks,
Scott
