Old raw water filter
Before I start wrench twisting anyone know how this comes apart?
It almost looks like the part on top twists off with a spanner but usually these things come apart at the bottom and there is some kind of filter.
The boat is an Islander 30 about 30 years plus old.

Sure, 'looks like a standard Groco. The top, with the three holes, apply a spanner to any two of the three, or use the opposing leverage of two screw drivers lodged into the "holes" and unscrew counter-clockwise (traditionally) after closing the seacock. Lift the filter basket that is inside and clean. Replace the filter basket (turn to fully seat in lowest position), screw on top and open seacock. 'take care and joy, Aythya crew

Looks like a Groco to me as well.

You may have to put some effort into getting the top to move so make sure the filter and hoses are properly supported. Once you've got the top off you can check on the screen. If it's as bad as the unit looks, you may want to replace it. I'd also highly recommend cleaning the glass so you can get a good idea of filter clogging or water flow. If you've got some time you might consider cleaning it up some as well. And I'd plan on changing the gasket as well.

These are real workhorses - simple but effective design with a very long life. The screens aren't so durable as the case though.

Thanks. I'll look around for parts.
Scared of putting a wrench to something this beat looking. Afraid of what might just twist off.

I didn't realize that the Groco is part of the ARG series - not the sound I make when I try to break this beastie apart! :laugher
