Mahogany & ash tiller has water stains . . .

Sanded a neglected tiller down to bare wood. There were two small spots that looked like shadows but didn't think anything of them. Applied first coat of urethane and the shadows (on the mahogany) turned black - apparently mold from being wet too long? Really spoils the appearance of the tiller!

Have already taken it back to bare wood. What have you used to clean stains of this nature? Would teak cleaner and brightener work?

Thanks in advance.

On my teak I clean with Oxiclean® and brighten with Bar Keepers Friend®. I've used Clorox® to remove stains on oak with some success. You might also try hydrogen peroxide. Don't mix these bleaches and rinse thoroughly.

It's iron

Turns out the black is actually iron from water sitting on the tiller. Mahogany is especially susceptible to this. Treatment is Oxalic acid - then rinse with distilled water!

Time for a new tiller cover too!

Denise--There are times when a fellow just has to look out for his own Ash...

...and of course, Mahogony.
