how to remove enamel registration # on Awlgrip paint?

Hi all,

I just bought a beautiful new boat, and will be changing the registration state... i.e. new registration #.

The current registration number is painted on - well done, in what I guess is enamel over what I know is an Awlgrip hull.

Is it possible to remove the enamel without damaging the underlying Awlgrip?

Or am I best to have a decal made with the appropriate background color to cover the original registration #'s?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Why do you assume the reg. # is not also in Awlgrip?

Actually if it is enamel there may well be a solvent/remover that will take it off without extensively damaging the Awlgrip. Work slowly on a small part of it and watch what happens - try not to let the remover overlap onto the background any more than you have to.

If the number is indeed Awlgrip then your alternate decal plan probably is the safest way to go - but a good match will be difficult.

Very good point - I just assumed the bootstripe, trim stripe and lettering were with enamel... I might try rubbing some acetone on the registration #'s... see wha thappens.

When we Awlgripped our previous boat it never occurred to us to use anything but Awlgrip again for striping and trim.
