wood that attaches to chainplates

my cal 21 has a section of rotted plywood that is supposed to be attached to the chainplate. i think the veneer (take a drink!) is mahogany. is it better to use plywood or can solid mahogany boards be used instead? i'd like to dress up the cabin as much as possible on the little tyke. thanks.
