Screeching wheel

Hi,
I have a 1987 O'day 272. The knob used to tighten the wheel makes a screeching sound when I turn the wheel. Naturally the looser it is the less noisy the sound. I have tried to remove it and possibly lubricate it by loosening but there is a stop at the end and I'm afraid of it breaking. Any suggestions?

As I turn the wheel, the rod from the brake is making the noise. (Edson wheel)

Thanks for the help, but the brake is perpendicular to the wheel axis on my boat.
