uniden voyager

I can pick up a used but nice uniden voyager for about 40 bucks. i think new they are about 90-100. anyone have experience with one of these, or any other reccs on handhelds? bearing in mind sole use would be as a backup to the mounted system, or occasional monitoring while puttering around the boat

thanks

Just saw your post. I have a Uniden Atlantis that I have been impressed with. Great battery life, fast charging either AC or DC, good signal. Sounds like you scored.

Hey

I have had a few uniden products (cb frs etc) and they were ok but the audio quality wasn't the best. I think that in a quiet environment, like on a sailboat under sail, it would be fine. You can't go wrong for the price

Omatako will become famous soon enough
I have had a Voyager for several years now and wouldn't exchange it for any other hand held radio. Congrats on a great buy - 40 bucks is for nothing.

well i played with it all weekend and must say im impressed. they packed a lot of features into that little unit, and it fits nicely in the hand. tras/rec good, vol good, sql control accurate. oh, and if left in scan mode the batt life seemed about double the rated 'use' time.

three small drawbacks (and im being a bit nitpicky)
1. the drop in charger inbound power plug being on the side limits mounting options.
2. the belt clip, while it clicks into place) seems a bit dodgy and i would be leery of clipping to a vest and jumping in.
3. reception in the cabin a bit spotty but i found a sweet spot

all in all a great little unit i would recc as a back up/remote monitor, and for small boats not going too far out it would probably be a fine main radio.
