Leaking Vented Loop

I have a vented loop on the hose from the head to the holding tank that squirts not so nice fluid out when the head is flushed.
The vented loop is a Marelon that appears to have a replaceable vent cap.

Has anyone else had the same experience where the vented loop leaks?
Is this a common failure? It sure is a messy failure......The vented loop is about 3 years old.
Is it worth trying to replace the cap on the vented loop or should I movce away from the Marelon parts?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

You can unscrew the top piece of the vented loop and clean it. Sounds like it is a bit gummed up and stuck in the open position. When clean it lets air in and nothing out.

Yup! All vented loop nipples need to be added to everyone's routine maintenance list.

Thanks for the input.
I will try cleaning it although I don't look forward to dealing with the smell.
At least the holding tank was pumped.....
