Wench of a Winch

Trying to take apart my 30 year old Barient 23 self-tailing winch to degrease, clean and regrease…Can’t get past the initial step of removing the line lifter and drum. I’m following the schematic and instructions from the guide found here: Barient Model 23 2 Speed

As instructed, I’ve removed the snap ring, the cover plate, and the second snap ring, but I can’t free the line lifter. I’ve used a hammer to tap it counter clockwise to unscrew it from the anchor sleeve, and it turns around once or twice, but then stops, probably because it comes in contact with the shoulder screws below it (which I can’t access). After a few hours, my hammer strikes became malicious, and I figured it was time to quit. Anybody done this before? Any suggestions?
