lubricate through hulls

The through hull valves on my boat are really stiff. How should they be lubricated? I've searched but not found a thread on this.

I take them apart and use marine grease while on the hard.Only other choice I see is come to the gulf coast bp has a special on now.marc

Get some lithium grease in a spray. With the seacock closed take off the hose and spray around the ball and let it sit overnight. That's not as effective as taking them apart but should help a little.

You might trying loosening them a bit for a few days and working them while loose and while you have applied the spray lubricant. Just be careful and be sure to remove or loosen the jam nut first. This is all assuming you have high quality bronze thru hulls, not the more modern and better???? plastic ones put on boats for the past few years.

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like I'll wait until the boat is hauled next. Being in the Puget Sound is great in that we don't have to haul our boats very often. OTOH, it does mean that a lot of these things get put off until the boat needs to be painted.
